Hello Life Stages Community! 🌱
It seems like yesterday the 2024 year transitioned from April to May and then June! We’re half-way through the year— can you believe it?!
In this newsletter, we’re combining our May and June newsletters to bring you essentials on mental health awareness and wellbeing— because taking care of your mental health is a priority year-round not only during Mental Health Awareness month in May! We also bring you a quick guide for a “one step-at-a-time” approach to make caring for yourself easy and simple!
Summer is not only a time of recreating outdoors, it’s also a time where more family bonding can occur and more intentional check-in opportunities are present as kids are home from school. In this special newsletter edition, we include information on cognitive distortions and how these can impact your adolescent.
Don’t forget to check out our Life Stages Spotlight highlighting recent community events and happenings at the end of this newsletter!

Do you have teens?
Do you know about cognitive distortions and how they impact them?
Now that summer break is in session for students, it’s a great time to check-in with your teen on their mental health. Teenagers and young adults are especially prone to experience various mental health issues. One of the main issues that the youth population face is cognitive distortions.
Cognitive distortion: exaggerated or irrational thought pattern involved in the onset or perpetuation of psychopathological stress, such as depression and anxiety
- Adolescents with cognitives distortions arising from childhood abuse or assault may face a persistent risk of engaging in harmful behaviors, chronic mental health issues, and can even lead to suicidal ideation
- Adolescents, particularly males, who develop online gaming addiction influenced by cognitive distortions have risks of developing social isolation, academic failure, and impaired emotional and social development
- Poor academic performance due to cognitive distortions can limit higher educational opportunities and future career prospects
So what can we do to fight cognitive distortion in order to not go through these consequences?
CBT can stop cognitive distortions through mindfulness.
Cognitive interventions such as CBT can help identify and challenge cognitive distortions by changing your psychological processes that are associated with stress and vulnerability and promoting your resilience through long-term changes in your behavioral patterns
Mindfulness: A strategy to help you focus on your current circumstances, sensations, and feeling
Mindfulness is helpful for reducing anxiety and depression symptoms in addition to increasing brain activity and the size of the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus, decreasing amygdala activity which is related to stress, and increasing functional connectivity between the prefrontal cortex and amygdala
